Meet Tyler Buffone,
Founder of Tutor Advance

Tyler Buffone, founder of Tutor Advance, standing in a grassy landscape with green hills behind him.

My name is Tyler Buffone, and I am the founder and owner of Tutor Advance. Originally from Winnipeg, I provide personalized online tutoring for students throughout Manitoba and beyond. My goal is to help students understand challenging material so they can approach their schoolwork with greater confidence and independence.

I began tutoring in 2011, teaching guitar to elementary school students, before moving into peer tutoring in high school and professional tutoring during university. These experiences taught me the importance of being patient and explaining concepts clearly.

In 2020, I founded Tutor Advance while completing my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a Concentration in Accounting at the University of Winnipeg. My academic background also includes calculus, discrete mathematics, and differential equations. Today, I work with students across a range of subjects, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, English language arts, and academic writing.

Through my experience tutoring Manitoba students, I have developed a strong understanding of the provincial mathematics curriculum, including high school pre-calculus. This familiarity helps me align lessons with students’ coursework while addressing gaps in the foundational skills they need to succeed.

What to Expect from Tutoring

Choosing a tutor is a personal decision. You should understand how the lessons will work and how they will address your child’s needs.

A Starting Point That Makes Sense

Our first sessions help me understand what the student already knows and where they need support. I may begin with a diagnostic assessment or use their current schoolwork to explore how they approach unfamiliar questions.

If a difficulty comes from an earlier concept, we take time to revisit it. Building that foundation makes new material easier to understand and gives students a more reliable way forward.

Clear Explanations and Independent Practice

I break challenging concepts into manageable steps and explain the reasoning behind each method. We work through examples together before the student attempts similar questions independently.

Their responses help me decide when to move forward and when to explain something differently. Students are encouraged to ask questions whenever a step does not make sense.

Resources to Review Between Sessions

After each session, students receive an Excel file containing the material we covered, including worked examples they can review at their own pace. This gives them a reference when completing homework or preparing for a test.

When additional practice would help, I provide homework focused on the skills that need attention. I adjust the amount to account for school assignments so the work remains manageable.

Communication About Progress

For school-age students, I keep parents informed about how lessons are going and what still needs attention. These updates explain what the student should review before the next session.

As students become more confident with the material, I adjust the lessons to keep the work appropriate for their needs. We may spend more time strengthening a difficult concept or move into more demanding questions when they are ready.

Online Sessions Through Google Meet

Sessions take place through Google Meet, allowing students in Winnipeg and beyond to attend from home. Shared digital notes make it possible to follow each explanation as it develops and revisit the work afterward.

Discuss Your Child’s Needs

A consultation gives us an opportunity to discuss your child’s coursework and what you hope tutoring will help them achieve. It is also a chance to ask questions and decide whether Tutor Advance is a good fit.
